door hardware question
Door hardware removal / installation?
I am trying to remove a Titan door lever and replace it with a new door knob. I have replaced door knobs several times in the past without any problems. For some reason, I am having a very difficult time removing the old door hardware (once again, it’s a Titan lever and deadbolt). Does anyone know the "secret" for successfully removing the old door hardware?
The inside of the lock has a small screw in the lever handle on the bottom side. Loosen the screw and remove the handle. Then you can remove the face plate with a screwdriver and you will see two screws behind the plate. Remove the screws and it’s downhill from there.
Exterior Double Door Hardware - Finish work?
Completing my house (had to fire the contractor). Anyway, I had purchased a pre-hung 8′ double door unit that is pre-drilled for knobs. The unit was pre-hung in the unit with the stationary door hardware alredy installed ( open the one door, then you have to flip the top and bottom levers to open the stationary door). Anyway, the holes were not drilled, nor do I currently have any of the hardware to mount to the top and bottom to ensure the hole do not get wallered out over time. As you can see, I am really not sure of the correct terms for these items and Home Depot is clueless (no, the door unit didn’t come from there) Can anyone tell me what I am needing secure this stationary door and where I can get it. Thanks in advance!
The top and bottom levers are called Flush Bolts, the two major suppliers in the USA are Baldwin and Ives. You could try contacting either of these companies and obtaining the two plates and four screws which are interchangeable. If you have a local hardware company or a door manufacturer they may stock flush bolts and have spare parts.
You can live without these parts as the stationary door is unlikely to be opened enough to wear out the holes but fitted they make the job look more professional.
A tip for locating the holes is to smear the head of the bolts with toothpaste, close the door and operate the bolts. You should have two circles of paste to position the holes.
Can shower door hardware be refinished?
I purchased new oil rubbed bronze fixtures for my bathroom. The problem is that the shower/bath enclosure doors have very ugly, shiny brass hardware (sliding door track, frame, handles, etc). I swear I once saw a home improvement show where they just painted the hardware (spray paint) to update the look. However, when I ask at home improvement places, they tell me that would not work. I’d rather invest $20 in paint and apply some elbow grease rather than spend $250 on a new door. What might work?
I have sprayed plastic, wood, and metal to match finishes I already had. There is a slogan out there that goes, "If it doesn’t move, paint it!" Of course you can paint the hardware! Make sure you buy a can of spray that goes on metal, mask off the other parts of the door, and spray. Even if it only lasts a year, cheap! Just respray.
