A doorknob is a device which enables a door as well as a cabinet to be opened.[1]
Most household doorknobs use a simple mechanism with a screw-style axle (called a spindle) that has at least one flat side, which is passed through the door latch, leaving some length exposed on each side of the door to which the knobs are attached. Knobs are attached on both sides by screwing or sliding them directly onto the spindle, and then securing one or more retaining screws (set screws) through the knob perpendicular to the flat of the spindle. Doorknobs that lose traction can frequently be repaired by replacing or adjusting the set screw, which prevents them from slipping on the spindle.
The location of the doorknob on the door may vary between a few centimeters away from the edge of the door to the exact center of the door, depending on local culture, decorative style or owner preference. The distance from the edge of the door to the center of the doorknob is called the backset.
Doorknobs can be difficult for the young and elderly to operate, especially infants. If a person lacks a firm grip a doorknob must sometimes be operated using two hands. For this reason doors in most commercial and industrial buildings and in many households now use an operating lever, rather than a doorknob, as the lever does not require a firm grip. Levers are also beneficial on doors with narrow stile widths where the reduced backset leaves insufficient space to comfortably turn a doorknob.
Doorknobs can spread many infections. Some materials, e.g. brass, copper and silver, are poisonous to many germs, via the oligodynamic effect. Brass and copper, for example, disinfect themselves of many germs within eight hours. [1] Other materials such as glass, porcelain, stainless steel and aluminum do not have this effect. Self-disinfecting doorknobs are particularly important in hospitals, but useful in any building.[tag]door knobs[/tag]

Dummy Door Knob? Doesnt Turn?
We just bought 5 Dummy Door Knobs and there beautiful but I dont get how they work? they didnt come with any hardware only 1 knob I took off an older door knob and connected the Dummy Door to out side and it doesnt turn? whats up with that
There are several types of handle sets for doors. An entry set is keyed, for use on an exterior door. A privacy set has a locking button or knob, on one side, like in a bedroom or bath. A passage set has a latch, but no lock, for a closet or hallway. A dummy set is usually paired with a matching operating unit on a double door. It is just a handle, made to match the operating unit. There are also specialty options, like storeroom, or security sets.
Door knob broken!! help!!!!!!!!!!?
okay my bathroom door knob has been broken for a while. its working on the inside..but the outside..if u close the door u cant open it
and my friend just closed it..and we tried to get it open for HOURS!!! cuz the fan and lights are on!!

Most of the time, it is the latch bolt itself that breaks, in situations like this. Many are often made of plastic.
Take a look at this link, and scroll to the bottom of the page… it looks like your latch is what is called the ‘adjustable latch’, but you may have the ‘plain latch’, without the affixed face plate. (This link happens to be to Kwik-set, but the mechanism is the same for other brands)
IF this is the part that is broken, then you can most likely get a replacement at your local hardware, or building supply store, without having to buy a whole new knobset assembly. Take the old one to the store with you for comparison.
Need help quick - door knob?
Had to change my door knob at my new place because the other one had no key to it… was trying to install it (long story short) when kids started fighting and breaking stuff in the yard. pulled them apart, brought youngest in house to separate them… and door wound up getting closed. The knobs weren’t screwed in, now both have fallen out… and the door will not open because the inside latch part is locked into the door and I can’t get it open. PLEASE help me open my door!
(Fortunately I do have another door to get outside, but I have NO knowledge of this kind of stuff and I don’t know what to do. Please help me!)
Take a flat bladed screw driver and insert it into the opening at the back of the inside latch part. Slowly use leverage to ease the latch out of the hole until the locking part clears. This should work. If not remove the 3 hinges by placing the blade of the screwdriver at the bottom of each hinge and tapping upward with a hammer or other heavy object.
