China spigot factory

A Spigot is a valve for controlling the release of a liquid or gas. In the British Isles and normally in the Commonwealth the word is used for any everyday type of valve, particularly the fittings that control water supply to bathtubs and sinks. In the U.S. the usage is sometimes more specialised, with the term "Spigot" restricted to uses such as beer Spigots and the word faucet being used for water outlets; however some Americans use "Spigot" in the broader sense as well.

spigot question

Frost-free spigot on all Winter?
I let my neighbors run water to their home through the Summer from our frost free spigot.( long story) It is getting cold, so I told them it had to be disconnected. They are saying that if they leave a trickle of water running, it wont freeze. This is a 60 foot garden hose on open ground. I am skeptical. Should I disconnect the hose as well as turn off the water to it? Do I need to turn off the water to the spigot? Or are they making sense.

Thanks for the thoughts, but I just need to know about whether the spigot might freeze or not. No value judgements, please.

Thank you all for the advice. I have unhooked the hose, turned off the valve, and left a note in the neighbor’s mailbox.
Best to let them go back to bottled water for the winter and avoid a catastrophe. It’s too cold to risk anything. Much obliged!

Depending on the outside temperatures, a trickle could still allow the hose to freeze. What if someone "forgets" to allow the trickle? If that happens, the hose freezes and your frostfree faucet breaks and causes a real problem.

Outside spigot water pressure questions?
1. what is the max pressure that’s allowed to come out of the spigot?

2. how can i determine what the water pressure is?
3. if it’s low how can i increase it?

the normal psi for a home is between 40 and 80…. u can buy a pressure gauge at the hardware store to check yours for about 10 bucks….attach to the outside tape

How do i turn on the spigot in my back yard?
ok, i bought a house this past winter. there is a water spigot in the back yard, it is free standing, meaning its not connected to the house or anything. the water does not turn on to it. i have a pump for my sprinklers, and best i can tell it has nothing to do with this spigot. meaning i have tried it with the pump on, and no water comes out. i am thinking it is part of the house’s water supply, and is turned off somewhere. i don’t have a basement, i have a crawlspace that is VERY tight. the other spigots outside work fine. i have checked all the sinks/water sources for possible locations for a turn off for it, and no luck. anyone have any idea where it would be? i am hoping not to have to get in the crawl space, but would at least like to know what i’m looking for before getting down there. thanks for any help.

ok- in response to a few of your answers, thank you for the ideas. i found the main water valve with the 5 sided nut, and i don’t think it could tie in to there. they are literally at opposite sides of my yard, and it’s about a half acre lot. i have to believe it would tie in somewhere else. i checked the crawl space, and couldn’t find any signs of a water valve, only my electrical box and my phone box. i also dug down with the spigot, to where it "elbowed" back towards the house, and there is no shut off or turn on there either. any other ideas? thanks again.

Sounds like you are going to have to trace it back. If it is galvanized pipe perhaps a metal detector will help if you have one or know someone that does. Other wise it is just a matter of digging down every few feet to find the pipe and see where it goes. If it isn’t buried to deep you could use some type of rod to shove down into the soil to find the pipe. Good luck
